On August 6, 1945 Enola Gay a B-29 bomber was ordered by president Truman to drop the atomic bomb named "Little Boy," on Hiroshima. At 8:15 A.M. the bomb was dropped with only 43 seconds left until detonation. Enormous shock waves, heat, and radiation blasted through the city instantly killing of the amount of people it would need to defeat battles if they had invaded. Only this was in affect instantly with no lose of American lives.
Three days later , on August 9 the United States had dropped another bomb on Japan this time over the city of Nagasaki. The bomb named "Fat Man" killed between 35,000 and 75,000 people. Faced with such destruction and the Japanese being shocked of Soviets joining the war, the Japanese surrendered. August 15, 1945 became known as V-J Day the day Japan surrendered.
Americans celebrated the surrender of the Japanese to their empowerment. This was extremely good news to the American soldiers now knowing they wouldn't have to go invade in a blood battle where they would be sure to lose most of their lives. One veteran recalled this as his thanks: "We would not be obligated to run up the beaches near Tokyo assault firing while being mortared and shelled...We were going to live. We were going to grow up to adulthood after all"
